In the 1870 census in Lee's Summit, Jackson County, Missouri, Susan Atchison is living in the household of Jonathon Goodrich, page 153(150?)household #162, dated 6 Aug 1870.Also living in the household, and listed after Susan is H. Barnard, male, 1 yr..I have no idea what relationship, if any, he is to Susan.
However, her daughter, Elizabeth, married James Barnard 8 January 1854 in Jackson County,MO, and she is shown in the 1870 census on page 155 (150?), Dwelling #181, with her husband and 5 children. That enumeration is dated 8 Aug 1867.
Another of Susan's daughters, Letha, married Francis Barnard 5 July 1858 in Jackson County.Francis is brother to James. They are in the 1870 census in household #163, on the same page as Susan. They have 3 children, all boys, and living with them is Joab Barnard, 28 yrs., who is a brother of James and Francis.
In the 1880 census, Susan is living in the household of James Barnard in Hogan township, Franklin County, AR, page 16, dated 15 June 1880, household #141.Elizabeth is not listed, and both Susan and James are shown to be widowed, so I assume Elizabeth died some time between 1870 and 1880.
In household #140, on the same page, are Francis Barnard, wife Letha, with sons Benjamin, Silas, and Samuel. Also living in the household is Nathan Atchison, 26 yrs., who is shown to be brother-in-law to the head of household. To me this means he is brother to Letha, also Elizabeth, and must be a son of Matthew and Susan.Apparently he was born about 1854-1855, and according to the census, was born in Missouri.
I would like to find out what happened to Matthew.I have found both Francis and James Barnard, and their wives/families in the 1860 census in Jackson County, but have not found either Susan, Matthew, or Nathan.I have info on other Atchisons who married siblings of James, and will give that to you if your are interested.I have not been able to establish a relationship, if there is any, to Susan or Matthew.
