Hooper Atchley (1887-1943) was my great uncle. I have a full length portrait of him in a stage costume taken in 1917. The family, at least my mother, called him "Uncle Doc."I have no idea where this name came from
He grew up in the house my great grandfather, Samuel Pleasant Atchley (1856-1924) built on Ten Mile Creek, ten miles west of downtown Knoxville. My grandfather, J. Arthur Atchley, was his older brother.
The house is no longer there, but the Ebenezer Mill is. My great-grandfather bought the property with the mill on it, and built the house across the street (Ebenezer Road) with lumber he harvested off the 15 acres, using the mill as a sawmill to cut the lumber.
