Benjamin Atchley and Martha Chambers Atchley were my fourth great grandparents too.Someone I wrote to from one of the message boards was nice enough to send me some documents re: the Petition for Citizenship of L. D. Long (I think).I don't have the entire document, just a couple of pages with testimony from George W. Vann and Pleasant Maples, and other tidbits of info.I am wondering what the outcome of the Petition was.Was L. D. Long admitted to the Cherokee Nation based on his relationship to James Chambers and Elizabeth Daugherty? In this Petition, the testimony is that both were Cherokee Indians by blood.
I've been studying the Cherokee By Blood Site and the Cherokee genealogy site to try to figure out where to look to find the numbers I need so that I can request copies of the correct applications. My line is through Martha Chambers & Benjamin Atchley's daughter, Lousia, who married Thomas Langston. 1. Benjamin Atchley m. Martha Patty Chambers 2.Lousia Atchley m. Thomas Langston 3.Martha Jane Langston m. John S. Brown 4. James Benjamin Brown m. Sarah C. Eslinger 5. Nora Brown m. Ottis A. Newsom<--my grandparents Grandmother was born in New Market, TN.
I searched the archives of the Cherokee list and found a post by someone who'd already found the Miller & Dawes numbers for some of the Longs.I wonder whether any other descendants applied, and whether they were admitted.
I also would love to have a copy of that book you've got. :)Do you know where I might be able to purchase a copy?
