Ira Aten and Roy Stephen
There is a hazy legend in my family involving Ira Aten and my grandfather, Roy Stephen (1880-1964) from Junction, Texas, and I'm wondering whether any version of it has come down in the Aten family. My grandfather and Ira reportedly had some history of conflict back in Texas, which was renewed when they were both in California later. My grandfather was always very closed-mouthed about his Texas days (he came out to Imperial County, California in 1900 and never went back), except to say that "some things are better left alone" and that in those days he "was good with a gun."Some time between the world wars, I think, he and Ira met at a Texas reunion in Balboa Park in San Diego and got into a fight.I don't know what the trouble back in Texas was or what precipitated the fight in San Diego.Does anyone know anything that would shed light on this legend?
