From "An Aten Genealogy" by Alan J. Lamb, p. 13."Two brothers of the first generation of Atens in America named their sons Adriaen.Hendrick Aten (c.1661-1750) and Thomas Aten (c.1670-1757) each named their firstborn in honor of their father.Adriaen, the son of Hendrick and Mary De Mott, was born 4 Sept. 1695. (59)Another source indicates c. 1691 for this Adriaen's birth. (60)"(The source numbers are theirs, not mine.)Does anyone have this book to see what source 60 is for Adrien's birth?I have several pages of it copied but do not have those sources copied. It may be from "Auten, Aten" compiled by Alice H. Kennedy. She states in her book, "Adriaen was born about 1691, died December 11, 1757."Both sources have Adrien, the son of Hendrick and Maria De Mott as married to Jacobje Middagh.
This book also shows Adriaen, the son of Thomas Aten and Elsje Skillman as being born about 1695 in New York, married Intje____before 1720; they had Dirck Aten bapt. 17 Sep 1720 at Somerville, Somerset, New Jersey. (p. 10)
From "Upstream, Downstream: The ancestors & Descendants of Peter and Hester Auter Engles 1625-1978 by Mary P. Engelson page 18:"Children of Adriaen Ater, son of Hendrick and Maria de Mott Ater, b. c. 1696, m. c. 1718, Jacobje Middagh, daughter of Dirck Middagh and Cathelyne Van Neste..."On p. 23, "Adriaen, son of Thomas Aten, Sr. and Elsje Skillman Aten, is often confused with his first cousin Adriaen who married Jacobje Middagh. This mistake was made in the "New York Genealogical and biographical Record," vol. 37, p. 26. (one of the references the Skillmans give - my comment). We agree with another view that the Adriaen who married Jacobje Middagh was the son of Hendrick Aten (Rutgers University Libary Mss; National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 15, 1927 - Isabella G. Beer).A good reason for assigning Adrien Aten, b. 4 Sep 1695, to Hendrick Aten is the naming of his older children for the paternal and maternal grandparents with no children named Thomas, Elsje, or Sarah.Nothing is know of Adriaen, thought to be the oldest son of Thomas Aten, Sr."
Although the date is wrong, the naming to me gives some credence (but not proof) that Adriaen is from Hendrick and Maria DeMott.
