I have further found that there are Atencio's in Argentina and that the name Atencio originally could have come from Sicily.Ancient history of Sicily is traced to the Greeks in the 6th centruy B.C. and the earliest traces of the Atencio history can be traced to this island.
The island was invaded by the Normans, the Byzantines, the Arabs and the Spanish. In the 12th century Peter of Aragon became King and Sicily came under Spanish Rule.Various forms of this Sicilian name can be found: Atencio, Atenzia, Atanasio, Atellino and others. The changes in spelling were created by the many dialects which had influenced the history of the island.Frequently the name change took place among fathers and son's and brothers.Sicily and the Island of Sardina remained under Spanish rule for the next few centuries.During this time the region prospered and the name Atencio was found in Messina where they were anciently seated. They were later found in Sicilia where Atancio was recorded and again held territories and recorded in that region on tax rolls. After Spanish rule left Sicily and returned to Spain, the name Atencio returned to Spain, where it came under changes again and from there to the new world.
It is interesting to see how many variations of the Atencio name existed and from where they all come from.
In my travels to the east coast,I have Italians with the name Atencio and on the west coast, Spanish. My father came from New Mexico and our family is Spanish.
Those who came from Spain gravetated to New Mexico and Colorado. Those from Sicily migrated to Ellis island, New York and New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
My wife and I are going to Spain, Italy and Sicily to see what other information we can obtain concerning the Atencio name.
