The unusual Atherton Names come for the first Atherton to come to America.General Humphrey Atherton that was born in 1609 in Atherton Castle Lancashire, Winwick, England is easily research.
I have reason to believe that John, Aaron, and Charles Atherton come from Humphrey's line. These three are brothers. This Aaron Atherton married Christina Coleman and moved with many relatives to Alexander County Illinois to start a Baptist coloney there about 1816-1820.
I can find no children for John Atherton and his wife Sally but Charles Atherton (wife Anna Baize) had a son that he named John Atherton Jr. and that son appears to have been the heir of his Uncle John Atherton. These three brother seemed to have been born about 1730s.
The above John Atherton Jr. had a son Aaron Atherton who was first married to Millie Hoover and Second to the widow of Samuel Howard, Nancy Montgomery Howard.By the first marriage.Aaron and Millie had a son that they named Aaron General Atherton, likely a reference to Humphrey Atherton.
One can find a reference to John and Aaron Atherton as charter members of the Beaver Dam Baptist Church in Kentucky.
I will redirect back to Aaron Atherton (1796 to 1869):
Children of Aaron and Millie 1.George H. (likely Humphrey) 2.John G. 3.Adam 4.Elizabeth H. 5.Mary 6.Aaron General 7.Lucy Ann
Children of Aaron and 2nd wife Nancy Montgomery Howard 1.Elijah 2.Delilah Jane 3.Susan Ann 3.James M. 4.William
The young Howard children of Nancy's first marriage also lived in the household.
Nancy was married to Samuel Howard the son of Robert Howard and his wife Diana Atherton.Robert died about 1810 and Diana remarried in 1815 to William Leach.I am a direct relative to Robert Howard's son, Nathaniel Howard.
I am interested in tracing Diana's family of origin and it is likely one of the three brother's Aaron, John, or Charles. The marriages of many of the Athertons and Howards are recorded.
I continue to research the Athertons in hope that I can find Diana Atherton Howard's parents and the family of Robert Howard.
