I searched the same schedule of churches for the marriage of Humphrey as I did for the baptism of his children.
This is all I found in terms of records of a reasonable date in terms of Humphreys birth -
1/29.03.1625Winwick Humphrey Atherton,Wigan and Mary Kennion (Kenyon) istius (base Latin forof this place ?)
Whilst we have a marriage to a Mary to my mind to my he seems young to be married at 17.5 years but this opinion is based on just one other 16th C study.
Also at the end of the 16th C two men in Wigan named Humphrey are recorded in terms of the burial of children not recorded in the baptism reg and either or both of these men could have sons named Humphrey also not recorded in the baptism reg BUT if such DO exist they could be Recusant .
If I can find the baptism of Mary Kennion / Kenyon and if she would have been in her teens in 1625 then this marriage looks more probable. Will let you know.
Humpray Atherton et Alice Traves (Travers)
Aside of the fact that the brides name is wrong I think that this H is the son of a Catholic Recusant of some little fame .Also, there is a Catholic priest in the Travers Family (so I am told).
(It is hard to know how many people are still Catholic at heart at this time but Recusant Catholics who own land pay double tax and 30 % of landowners in this part of Lancs are Catholic and pay up rather than conform .)
Web Sites refer to Mary Wales as the bride of H. I can find no such marriages in Lancs.
Web Sites refer to H as resident in Preston . I cannot understand this, except that he could have sailed from the port of Preston to the port of Bristol in order to take ship to America. From memory there is not even ONEAtherton recorded in Preston up to and including the year 1635!!!
I wonder if you would be kind enough to send me a short note of Humphreys military appointments? I now work one day a week in a military museum and we should be glad of the information.
Also, since I have extracted the records of some hundreds of Athertons between 1570 and 1650 I wonder if people would be interested in anything I can find out about James Atherton, a contemporary of Humphrey?? I understand that he was born circa 1625 but I do not wish to fill up the web site with info that is of no interest.
