According to the History of BEAVER DAM Baptist Church History:Beaver Dam Church was constituted on March 1798 with five charter members, viz., JOHN ATHERTON SR., SALLY ATHERTON, AARON ATHERTON, CHRISTINA ATHERTON, AND James Keel.Source:PRIMITIVE BAPTIST HISTORY:CHURCH AND FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH ASSISTANCE FOR OHIO COUNTY, KENTUCKY.
From Pulaski County, Illinois Genealogy Notes, Volume 1, 1988:SHILOH CHURCH.....continued
In Alexander County it was the English Baptists who had apparently settled in New York in Colonial Times, moved to Kentucky, when the more venturesome followed the lure of the river and of the West and came to Alexander County about hundred strong. One historian described them as a Church settlement consisting of AARON ATHERTON, eighty years old, his 3 sons, AARON, JOHN C., AND SAMUEL, AND THEIR SONS, AARON, NATHANIEL, and TALBOT, and sons-in-law GILES WHITAKER, MARTIN ATHERTON, WILLIAM AND AARON BIGGERSTAFF, WILLIAM WARFORD, HENRY JOHNSON, LANGHAMED. HOLLINGSHEAD AND THOMAS HOWARD, together with other relatives and friends. The company was about the size of the Pilgrim Colony as there were nine families of the Athertons and their relatives that came here together, at the same time.
The above is a small portion from the PULASKI COUNTY, ILLINOIS GENEALOGY NOTES.
I believe this migration occurred about 1818.Thomas Howard married a Sarah Atherton but I do not know which of Aaron and Christina Atherton's sons was her father.Sarah Atherton's sister, Elizabeth married William Biggerstaff.Thomas Howard's sister Sarah Howard married Aaron Biggerstaff. These young people all came from the area of Ohio County, Kentucky.
Aaron Biggerstaff and Sarah Howard lived in Illinois for a time and later migrated to Prairie Township, Berryville, CarrollCounty, Arkansas. They had been married in Alexander County, Illinois January 20, 1822.
In the Alexander County 1820 CENSUS a group living in the same community were:Aaron Biggerstaff, Aaron Atherton, John Atherton, William Biggerstaff, Thomas Howard, Moses Atherton, Samuel Atherton and Martin Atherton. The last land transaction in Illinois of Aaron Biggerstaff and Sarah Howard Biggerstaff was 17 November 1835.They must have moved to Arkansas after that date.
Alexander County, Il was not made a county until 1819 and some of the early settlers can be found in Union County, IL.In the 1818 State Census for Union County, IL you can find Biggerstaff, William; Etherton, John, Moses, Samuel, Aaron; Howard, Thomas, Aaron:HollenHead, Frances; and Whitaker, Alexandria, John,Thomas.
The English Baptist Church is also know as the Primitive Baptist Church.Aaron Atherton, the older, was a decendant of Humphrey Atherton through his son Consider. The early Athertons were of the Puritian Religion.
I do not have a complete list of Aaron and Christina Atherton's children.I do believe that Aaron, John and Charles Atherton were brothers.John did not seem to have children and the son of Charles Atherton who was named for his uncle inherited from the older John Atherton. You will note that those names come up again in the names of Aaron and Christina's sons and grandsons found in the Illinois group.
My Howard relative, Robert, married Diana Atherton.I am still uncertain who her father and mother were but they could have been Aaron and Christina. Two of Robert and Diana's children are in the Illinois group.
Robert Howard died about 1810 and in 1815 Diana Atherton Howard remarried. This bought about a great deal of legal papers to protect the Howard children's interest in their father's estate.Thomas Howard was legally made exc. of his father's estate----therefore he must be 21 years of age in 1815.Placing his date of birth about 1794 and his parents marriage just before that. The widow of another Howard son, Samuel, married a grandson of Charles Atherton. That grandson Aaron was the son of John Atherton.
It is important to sort names by generation and ages and dates. They just seemed to use the same names over and over again. It has taken me years and many charts to begin to sort this group out.The best approach as been through the Older Charles Atherton Family in KY and through some of the Biggerstaff family histories.
I would love to confirm Diana Atherton's place in this group of Athertons.I know that she belongs there with all of the intermarriages of Howards, Biggerstaffs, and Atherton and the names of children. They seem to have married cousins.
I would suggest that you look closely at the Aaron Atherton family. This Aaron was the son of John Atherton who was the son of Charles Atherton. This group stayed in KY.The above Aaron Atherton was first married to Mildred Hoover and after she died married Nancy Montgomery Howard.Nancy was the widow of Samuel Howard.Samuel Howard was the son of Robert Howard and Diana Atherton Howard. This brought together a large group of Atherton and Howard children and then Aaron and Nancy continued to have more children.
