Hi Mike.I’m aware of who Richard Mather was in the Colonies after arriving on the ship “James” in 1635.I live close to Salem, Massachusetts; and know that his grandson was Cotton Mather, who was largely responsible for the witch trials that resulted in the horror there.Mather wrote a book, “Memorable Providences Relating to Witchcrafts and Possessions,” that described the “symptoms” of those “afflicted with witchcraft.”Cotton Mather’s father was Increase Mather, president of Harvard College; so the Mather family is quite well known (infamous) here in Massachusetts.
My information is that Richard Mather was born in the parish of Winwick, Lankashire in 1596; and was accused of “non-conformity,” then was suspended in 1633 and again in 1634.He preached in the Liverpool area; but hopped on the ship James with his wife (Catherine Holt) and their children bound for the Colonies after being “advised” that he better get out of Dodge (an American expression meaning “get out of town or else”).
It’s ironic that Richard Mather was forced to leave England due to being persecuted, and ending up with a grandson who was a notorious persecutor of women.I understand that Cotton Mather stuttered badly, which might explain a lot about his attitude towards women. The history of religion is replete with men who abused their positions for control and power over others.
I’m looking forward to hearing what your conclusions are about James Atherton; and will send you my email address privately.
