Moses Atherton son of James Atherton and Sarah Smith of Lancaster Mass was baptized in Lancaster July 20, 1718.He married Abigail Davis daughter of Jonathan Davis of Rutland Mass. and later Concord Mass.Abigail was born Aug.3 1725 in Concord Mass.Moses and his brothers and father were in Sharon,Conn. and Amenia NY in the period ~1740-1758.Jonathan Davis also moved to Sharon Conn. and Amenia NY about the same time. Town records of Sharon Conn list a daughter Abigail born to Moses and Abigail Atherton Sept. 30, 1746. No other children of Moses and Abigail are listed. Around the late 1750's, Moses Atherton with his brothers James and John went to Newton, Sussex County, NJ.In a 1760 deed, Moses Atherton is described as of Newton NJ when he sold all of his lands in Sharon, Conn. to Rev. Ebenezer Knibloe of Sharon.Moses Atherton was a constable in Hardyston, Sussex County, NJ in 1762.His brothers James and John Atherton both signed a petition for a person applying for a Tavern License in Hardyston NJ in 1762. James and John Atherton went back to Amenia and were early settlers in the Wyoming Valley,Pa (then Westmoreland Conn., now Luzerne County) through the Susquehanna Company. What became of Moses and Abigail(Davis) Atherton? My ancestor Caleb Atherton was also an early settler in the Wyoming Valley and I believe that he could be a son of Moses and Abigail, given that Caleb named his son Moses. Caleb Atherton served in the American Revolution as a member of Capt. Samuel Ransom's Co. one of the two companies raised in Westmoreland Conn. The father of Abigail Davis, Jonathan Davis moved from Amenia to what is now Columbia County, NY.His will is dated Sept. 10, 1780.Jonathan in the will says that he is of New Britain in the County of Albany NY. He mentions daughter Abigail, so she is still living. The will states "and Abigail my daughter at my deth if she cometh for it to have five bushels of wheat" That statement indicates to me that Abigail probably did not live too far away from her father. I am writing this post to see if anyone has any additional info about Moses and Abigail(Davis) Atherton and their children.
