My wife and I recently traveled to Stamping Ground KY on the 20th of December 2001.We were following a lead provided by Douglas Edward Atkins (my brother) concerning the last known burial site of Thomas B. Atkins. The head stones of Thomas B. Atkins and of Nancy Shackelford were both found and the correct dates were confirmed as follows:
Thomas B. Atkins
Born - Apr 29 1785
Died – Oct 22nd 1859
In his 75th Year
Note: It appears that the reason for the discrepancies concerning Thomas B. Atkins dates are due to cracks and wear. The headstone was found lying under approximately 2 inches of dirt and grass and had significant wear and damage. There was a vertical crack running the full height of the stone through the birth, death, and “In his 75” dates and horizontally through his death year. After carefully examining the letters and numbers I was able to confirm that the year of death was not 1850 but instead 1859.This is further confirmed by the 75 year of his death (according to the stone) and the period between 1785 and 1859 being the only possible combination for this to occur.Comparison was also made to other numbers on the same stone.I took pictures and have them available for anyone requesting one.
Nancy Shackelford-Atkins
Born – Apr 13th 1788
Died – Jun 22nd 1866
In Her 78th Year
Note:This stone read “Nancy” “Wife of” “Thos. B. Atkins” and was found first buried under approximately 2 inches of dirt and grass.Only the “N” could be seen in the Died month, however, if it was Jan (the only other three letter abbr. Ending in “N”) then she would not have made it to her 78th year which is clear at the bottom of the stone.Although a small part of the lower left side was broken off the dates and words were fairly clear and unambiguous.
Both sites are within 1 foot of each other and are located in the cemetery of the Stamping Ground Baptist Church, 3309 Main Street Stamping Ground KY 40379.Stephen V. Bruce is the current Pastor and the church’s phone number is 502-535-4494.Stamping Ground is located approximately 20 minutes north of Lexington KY in Scott County (I-75 north to 460 west to 227 north to Stamping Ground).
Anyone with information as to the burial sites of Dudley Atkins (son of Thomas B. Atkins) and/or Edward Atkins (Father of Thomas B. Atkins) would be appreciated.
