Benjamin E. Atkins Headstone
My mother, Cassie Irene Whitlock Sawyer, recently passed away at age 94.While going through some of her vast collection of pictures I ran across two photographs of people sitting in front of a tombstone. One of the pictures is of a man and a woman who look to be in their mid 30s which no one in my family can identify. The other picture has four young women who appear to be between 15 and 20.One of the women is my mother but no one has been able to identify the other three.I would guess that both of these pictures were made in the early 1920s but from the shadows I can tell that they were not made at the same time.
The people in both pictures block out some of the markings on the tombstone but between the two I can make out the following inscriptions:
Benjamin E. Atkins
Athens Tenn. Aug. 21 1848
???sellville Ky.Feb. 25 1909
????yWife of Benjamin E. Atkins
????oTenn.????ber 2 1???
The tombstone is a very nice one in what appears to be a well kept cementery.I can make out some other large tombstones in the background. Can anyone give me any information about this Benjamin Atkins and his wife.I have no idea where the cemetery is located and I have no clue as to why my mother would have had her picture taken there.Any help would be greatly appreciated and if anyone can help identify the other people in the pictures and would like a copy I will be glad to provide them.
Thanks,
Don Sawyer
