Since posting the original message in this string I have located entries in the 1880 and 1900 census that I beleive are for this Benjamin E. Atkins.
In 1880 he is listed as B.E. Atkins, age 31, in Buncombe County, NC.His wife is listed as R. D. Atkins, age 21.The also have a son listed as E.E. Atkins, age 2.His occupation is listed as teacher and he states that he was born in Tennessee, his father was born in SC, and his mother was born in TN.
In 1900 he is listed as Benjamin E. Atkins, age 51, in Bradley County, Tennessee. His month and year of birth are listed as Aug. 1848, which matches the inscription on his tombstone. His occupation is listed as teacher. The place of birth for him and his parents matches the 1880 census. His wife's name is a little hard to make out but it looks like Ruth D. and she is age 41. They have three children at home as follows; Nancy (or Mary) F., age 17, Lillie M. age 13, and Benjamin W. age 11.
From other postings on this forum it sounds like this Benjamin's father might have been born or lived in Laurens County, SC.My mother was born and grew up in Laurens and Union Counties. For that reason I wouldn't be surprised if this Benjamins tombstone is somewhere in the general area of Laurens County, SC.
If anyone can identify this Benjamin E. Atkins and where this tombstone is located I would really appreciate it.I don't know for sure but I have a feeling that this Atkins tie in might be significant in my mothers heritiage.Any help will be much appreciated.
