I may as well join the speculation about the Atkins fellows.
My research shows this:
Spencer Atkins (b. 1794) married Millie or Milly Franks (b. 1793) and they had a son, Martin Atkins, b. 1823 in Lowndes County, MS.In 1850, Martin Atkins was living in Fayette County, AL.He married Nancy P. Kemp.
The children of Martin Atkins and Nancy P. Kemp were:William Jefferson, John H., Sara F., Nancy Jane, Thomas, and Mary Ann.
There is a Martin Atkins listed in the lst Alabama Cavalry during the Civil War.He was mustered on Oct. 20, 1863 into Company H, lst Alabama Cavalry, as a private. If this is accurate, he would have been a 40 year old fighting for the Union. He was either killed in the war or killed when he returned to the confederate south. His death date is shown as 1868.
