Re: A circus Atteberry family?
Robert L. Atterbury was born in 1866 in St. Louis, MO, likely the son of William Wesley Atterbury (see p 715 of Wayne Atteberry's book or p 347 of Winter's and Mitchell's book) and supposedly ran away to join a circus while quite young. His obituary does not mention the name of his first wife or the names of his children by her other than perhaps his son Robert, who was also in the circus trade, and took over his father's show when he died. Robert L.'s 2nd wife was Rose Hein. With her he had two daughters, neither of those are named Margaret.
I have copies of a number of things given to me by another researcher who has been working on RobertL.'s identity and proving his relationship to the family. While we are fairly certain of how he descends from William, the immigrant, proving it is another thing. A paper he filled out to supply biographical information for circus pamphlets, mistakenly lists his parents as himself and his 2nd wife. The year and place of his birth are mentioned.
It is possible that Margaret, may have been one of the unnamed daughters of the 1st wife who died young. Perhaps the younger children were placed in foster/adoptive homes so that Robert could continue with his circus business.
Contact me privately and I will put you in touch with the researcher working on this and see about sending you copies of what she has shared with me. Among my treasures is a photo of an Atterbury Bros. Circus poster in full color. It is framed and hangs on the wall next to my computer. My address is on file with genforum.
