William Harvey Wilcox, went by the common name as Harvey with most of the family. He was the son that married Abigail Atwood that together had a son that was named James Davenport Wilcox that is in my direct line.
This Willaim Harvey Wilcox was the son of Joseph Wilcox and Mabel Carter by Joseph's first marriage.
I was skeptical on this when I ran across the 'second' William also, and I agree that it was a bit odd and probably contributed to my William Harvey Wilcox using Harvey as his common name.
The 'second' william is the product of Joseph and his second wife, Mary Holmes Atwood Wilcox.Mary's father was William Holmes, and she had a huge, abeit a rather oddly choice of naming children after presidents and revolutionary war heroes. The second william was born in 1841, after William Harvey Wilcox was married (to Mary Holmes Atwood Wilcox's oldest daughter Abigail Atwood). This second William was William Henry Harrison Wilcox. This name fit with his mother's father's name and also possibly a little for his mother's (Mary's) daughter's (Abigail's) new husband's name and his older stepbrother. His name also was fits with Mary Holmes Atwood Wilcox's other boys names:Benjamin Franklin Wilcox, Thomas Jefferson Atwood, and George Washington Atwood.
This presidential and revolutionary (mainly virginia) naming process of Mary's appears to be from her father's apparent service in the Virginia Rev. War forces; and at the same time that a Benjamin Holmes was a captain in the Virginia Revolutionary War forces.Joseph Wilcox's father also served in that war, but Mary and Joseph were a second marriage for both, making that not the real reason for her nameing preferences since she was naming her boys like that before she married Joseph WilcoxMary's father was a William on the Holmes side. Her first husband was also a William (Atwood) from Shenandoah County Virginia where the first marriage for her occurred.
Mary also named her first daughter Abigail apparently after her first husbands sister, and her second daughter Rachel which was Mary Holmes mother's first name.
Mary Holmes also had a brother William, and a brother George.Mary's none William bothers, Reuben and George both in turn named a son William.
The summary is that I agree with you, it seems rather odd, but taken in the context of the inter-relationships (Mary Holmes Atwood and daughter Mary Atwood; marrying Joseph Wilcox and son William Harvey Wilcox) within a year. And the predomoninance of the William name in Mary's family, and her major family pride of the Holmes war service it begins to make sense.
At first this was one of the things that gave some trouble trying to piece the family stories together with the records.
