Walter Sr. was in the 3rdBattalion of Somerset Light Infantry in 1883 at age 17.
He enlisted for General Service with the 1st Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry at Taunton on 4 Aug 1884 at age 18. Private Walter Avis was appointed Lance Corporal on 3 Dec 1884. He served in England until Feb 1886 when he was sent to India, landing on 13 Mar 1886. He spent over 6 years in India. He fought in the Burmese Campaign in 1885 - 1887 and was awarded the India Medal and clasp in Burma. He came to Pennsylvania in 1906 and moved to Charleston, WV in 1921. His family joined him in 1907.
