Janice-I have been researching the Shirley-Avis connection for some time and am interested in knowing the source for your note that Walter Shirley and Dorcas Avis emmigrated around 1720.It has been my belief that Dorcas was the daughter of Robert Avis and Ann Jarvis of Calvert County, MD, probably married Walter Shirley around 1726 probably in MD but maybe in NJ, and thereafter moved west to VA around 1745 where Walter received a land grant from Lord Fairfax in (then) Frederick Co., now Jefferson Co, WV, in 1750.There is a birth record for Dorcas in Christ Church in Calvert Co. MD in 1708, along with a sister Jane and a brother Jarvis.Be happy to elaborate on this if you wish.
