Re: Aaron Avrutis
In looking at the manifest with the Sazlavskys, I see it says they came from Kiev.My grandfather's papers say he was from Pereyaslav.Maybe they were also from there and just said the name of the bigger city nearby, but maybe not.
I think Leib Sazlavsky paid the passage. The person whose name is over his paid his own passage; it says "self" in that column.Leib is on the next line, his wife's name just below, then the names of 10 children, then Pokrasa. There is a bracket mark around all 13 names with just a ditto sign -"- in the middle of the bracket mark in the who paid passage field.Pretty much next to the ditto sign in the field asking how much money they had is the number 20, above it, more faintly, the number 17.50.What significance does that have?
On his Social Security card application, my grandfather gave his mother's maiden name as Aschadoff.Blume's maiden name is shown as Homelsky on 2 of her children's Social Security card applications. My grandfather's sister was married to a man with the surname Israetsky or something similar.Do any of those surnames mean anything to you?I have copies of letters the Israetskys wrote from Pereyaslav to family in the U.S.One says that Melech Israetsky, my grandfather's sister's husband was also a first cousin. Two family letters also mention someone named Sholem Helner who was in the U.S.; it's not clear who he is though, or if he is a relative.
This is getting somewhat afield from this Avrutis surname forum, so if you do see any other connections here, perhaps you would send me your e-mail address and we could continue this privately.Your decision of course.
