I am interested in finding additional information about: Elbridge Gerry AXTELL who was born on 19 Nov 1834 in Chesterfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts, USA and died on 15 May 1915 in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts, USA at age 80. He was son of William AXTELL and Hodesh ELDERKIN. He was not a real close cousin to me, I think he was a 5th cousin.
I was wondering if anyone knows how he got the name Elbridge Gerry. His namesake was a Patriot and signed the Declaration of Independence. Elbridge Gerry was from the state of Rhode Island which makes me wonder how Elbridge Gerry Axtell came to be named after him.
I know that it was not uncommon during that era to name children after famous people. However, there were more recognizable figures from his own state of MA (John Hancock, John Adams, Samuel Adams, Robert Treat Paine) including a President. So I was wondering if anyone has any further details about how he came to be names.
