Searching for letters, journals, and other personal documents referencing the life and military service of Orlando Kirtland Axtell. He began his military service in 1861 for a yearlong stint as a musician in the band of the First New York Infantry. In September 1862, he enlisted in the First New York Mounted Rifles. In July 1865, Axtell and others who had survived the war were consolidated with the Second New York Rifles to form a new regiment, the Fourth New York Provisional Cavalry. Axtell served with this organization until it disbanded and mustered out of the army in November 1865.
Axtell became a lawyer in Morristown, New Jersey. He died in 1884 at age 43.
