There is presently no Ayers serving as chief of the Catawbas.There are approximately 65 or so members with the name Ayers.Col. David Ayers, the chief from 1760 to 1764 and who represented the Catawbas at the great peace conference held at Ft. Augusta, GA in 1763 represented the tribe and served as spokesman during that time.Col. Ayers was a white man from the eastern part of the state (Tyrrell County of NC) and was the son of John and Martha Ayers.Col. Ayers was born in 1720 and died in 1790.Many of the Catawba Indians took his name, hoping to gain favor from the white man.This was a common practice in those days.
