Ayling in Rotherhithe and Portsmouth 1840-1910
I am researching my maternal grandmother's family.
Henry David Ayling (B abt 1847) in Rotherhithe married Jane Sophia Strong (b 1849). They probably had 9 children - Beatrice, Jenny, Ethel, Earnest J (b 1877), Stanley (b 1871), Eva J (b 1869), George W (b 1879), Clifford (b 1881) and my G Grandfather Henry Wright Ayling (b 1873)
Henry married Elizabeth Kingsbury Semmens (b 1874 Goldhanger, Maldon, Essex, died 1945) and they had 6 children, all of whom are recorded as being born in Rotherhithe. Edith Florence (b 1903) Winifred Doris, May (b 1897 died in infancy), Gladys Muriel (b 1909), Elizabeth Mary (b 1893) and my Grandmother Rebecca Eva (b 28 Sep 1894)
I've not been able to trace any of the others, but my grandmother recalled being sent on holiday, in the early 1900s, with her sisters (in batches!) to an uncle who was probably a civilian foreman in the naval dockyard in Portsmouth. So he could have been Earnest Stanley or George (probably not Clifford as I think he lived in London).
I have not been able to trace any sibligs of Elizabeth K Semmens, but of course the uncle could be from that side.
I notice that there are Ayling connections in Gosport, next door to Portsmouth, Alton - not very far away and other towns in south Hampshire.
Do any of theses names ring a bell?
