You might want to look at the Bayer or Beyer pages here on Genforum. I'm pretty sure these are all of the same origin - I do think it means, ultimately, "person from Bayern or Bavaria", but that may have been way back in time. My paternal grandmother was Albertina BEYER, and her father was Conrad Beyer b. 1845, but I've still been unable to trace his line back to Germany. I'm pretty sure one of George Washington's bodyguard was a Beyer as well, so there's a long and short history of Baier/Beyers in the U.S. And...a group of people as large as many Bavarians through time is going to mean many of us aren't related, even though we have forms of the same name.
