John W. Bainum/Baynum family IL/KY/KS/CO
Hello from Kansas!
I'm researching the family of Henry P. Sullivan, my great-grandfather.The Sullivan family is from Covington, KY.
I'm posting on this board in an effort to make a connection with Henry P. Sullivan's sister, Emma, and John W. Bainum/Baynum, who I believe was her husband.
John W. Bainum/Baynum was born 27 May 1824 and died 25 Dec 1905 in Wichita, KS.His first wife was Empress Sellman who died 27 Sep 1866.They had 7 daughters, America, May F., Ellie F., Elsie G., Anne E., Della, and Minnie C., all born in ILL or Ohio.There is much info on this family, but little on John's second family in Kansas.
John W. Bainum/Baynum married Emma Sullivan(?) in 1868 in Covington, KY.In the 1870 census, they are living in Covington with a daughter, Clara, age 9/12 and Lydia Crossly, age 4, and with daughters America, May, and Della from the first marriage.
In 1880, John and Emma are living in Reno CO, Kansas with daughters Letta (Lydia), Carrie (Clara), and Maggie, and sons, John W., and James P.Also living with them is my great-grandfather, Henry P. Sullivan, listed as "boarder".
Research has revealed that Lydia, Maggie, and another baby died before 1890.James P. died in 1894.That leaves John W. and Emma, with children Carrie and John W. in 1895.
In Oct 1895, the family moved to Pueblo, CO.John W. (ONLY) moved back to Kansas in Dec 1897.According to John's Civil War pension file, Emma died in Cripple Creek CO in Jan 1897.I can find no record of her death other than the pension file.
John W. is living with his sister and brother-in-law in RedKey, IN in the 1900 Census.He moved back to Wichita, KS where his daughter, American Bainum Kramer, lived in 1905, and died there on Christmas Day 1905.
I have no other information on the children, John W., Jr. and Carrie.My mother has told me that her mother told her she had a couple of cousins who moved to Cripple Creek, CO and were never heard from again--that would be John W., Jr. and Carrie.
I have 3 goals to accomplish on the Bainum/Baynum line:
1.Prove John W. Bainum married Emma Sullivan, my great-grandther's sister;
2.Locate a death record for Emma Bainum/Baynum; and
3.Discover what happened to John W., Jr. and Carrie--where did they go from Colorado??
Thanks to all who read this query and respond.
