Descendants of John Baldwin,
http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/b/a/1/William--F-Baldwin/http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/b/a/1/William--F-Baldwin/, March
1997. A brother or cousin of Sylvester Baldwin who died during their
passage on the ship Martin to New England in 1638. John was a
settler in Milford in 1639 after its founding, because he was not a
member of the church which had established Milford as a religious
community or colony. Homestead was original lot#13 on the west side
of the river in Milford. He joined the church 19 March 1648. Moved
to Newark, New Jersey around 1667, but later returned to Milford.
Was a sergeant in the Connecticut militia 1658.

June 1622. Named in will of uncle Richard Baldwin 18 February
1632/3. Named in will of brother Richard Baldwin in1634. Considered
to be the immigrant to Norwich as no record is found in England after
1637 for John.

P.H. Haselton 1989, The English Ancestry of Joseph and Sylvester
Baldwin, p. 25. Is he the John, cousin of Sylvester, who went to New
England?

Marriage 15 August 1640 to Mary Camp. Second marriage to Mary Bruen
November 1653.

William F. Baldwin, post to [email protected], 18 June 1998.
John Baldwin, son of John and Hannah Baldwin, was probably the John
Baldwin of Norwich, not this John Baldwin.

H.F. Seversmith 1939, Colonial Families of Long Island, New York, and
Connecticut, Being the Ancestry and kindred of Herbert Furman
Seversmith, vol. 1, p. 233. He signed the papers for administration
of the estate of his mother Hannah, who died intestate. No further
record of him in England.

Name: Henry BALDWIN
Sex: M
Birth: 1529 in Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire, England
Note:
J.L. Chester 1888, New England Genealogical Society Register vol. 38,
pp. 160-170. Named in father's will dated 16 January 1552/3. No age
mentioned. Named (Henry Baldwin of Dundridge) in will of cousin
Thomas Baldwin 11 October 1570. He became owner of Dundridge Manor
1577/8. Will in Aston Clinton Parish, Buckinghamshire, dated 2
January 1599/1600. Named in will are wife Alice; son John, to
receive 4 crofts (called Stybbings) in Wendover; son Robert, to
receive land in Flanden and Hempstead in Hertfordshire; daughter
Agnes; son Richard, named as executor of his father's will; son
Sylvester and his sons John and Henry; James Bonas (husband of
daughter Jane) and his son Henry Bonas; sister Lettice Foster; son-in-
law Richard Salter (his wife apparently deceased); and brothers John
Baldwin and George Adams of Little Harwood, these to act as overseers
of the estate. Will proven in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury,
London, 2 July 1602. Henry buried Aston Clinton 1 June 1602.

A.V. Woodman 1959, New England Genealogical Society Register 113, 245-
248. Purchased Dundridge Manor in 1578.

P.H. Haselton 1989, The English Ancestry of Joseph and Sylvester
Baldwin, p. 21. A yeoman and apparently successful. Presumably (if
older brother Richard had died as suggested) he inherited the
tenements and lands in Cholesbury. He accumulated lands in Wendover.
In 1595 he purchased properties in Hertfordshire, just across the
boundary some 6 miles from St. Leonards. 1577, he purchased the
lands, tenements, and hereditaments belonging to the manor of
Dundridge, from John Pakington. Son Richard may have purchased
properties at the same time, but it does not appear that son Richard
and father Henry held Dundridge jointly.

H.F. Seversmith 1939, Colonial Families of Long Island, New York, and
Connecticut, Being the Ancestry and kindred of Herbert Furman
Seversmith, vol. 1, pp. 229-230. With son Richard, he purchased the
Manor of Dundridge from Sir John Pakington on 14 April 1578.
Death: 1 JUN 1602 in Dundridge, Aston Clinton Parish, Buckinghamshire, England
Note: Date of burial inside church at Aston Clinton..

Jane BALDWIN b: 1577 in Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire, England
Agnes BALDWIN (3) b: BEF JUL 1579 in Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire, England
______________________________________________
Name: Richard BALDWIN (3)
Sex: M
Birth: ABT 1503 in Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire, England
Note:
His parents are not Sir John Baldwin (11 August 1470 Aylesbury,
Dundridge, Buckinghamshire, England - 24 October 1545
Buckinghamshire, England) and Agnes Dormer (circa 1482 Wycombe,
Buckinghamshire, England - bef 1565). This John Baldwin had no male
heir. His daughter Agnes married Robert Pakington and their son
inherited John's land. The son of John's widow Agnes rented
Dundridge Manor to a Richard Baldwin who was probably a rich
relative.

Alternatively, birth place Hayle, Buckinghamshire.

J.L. Chester 1888, New England Genealogical Society Register vol. 38,
pp. 160-170. Richard Baldwyn or Bawldwyn of Donrigge, will dated 16
January 1552/3, proved 21 February 1552/3. He was probably the
tenant of the Dundridge Manor, not its owner. Mentioned in the will
are wife Ellyn (Ellen); daughter Alis; daughter Agnes (under age 19
in 1552, hence born after 1533); Daughter Cicelly (under age 19 in
1552, hence born after 1533); daughter Letise (under age 19 in 1552,
hence born after 1533); son John, to inherit the farm at Dongrove,
Chesham Parish (under age 23 in 1552, hence born after 1529); son
Henry; son Richard, to inherit his tenth in Cholsbury (under age 23
in 1552, hence born after 1529); the son of brother Heughe Baldwyn;
brother John Baldwyn; and brother John Apuke.

A.V. Woodman 1959, New England Genealogical Society Register 113, 245-
248. Taxed 1525 on 40s of goods in Aston Clinton. He is the son who
probably married in 1524 and received a gift of lands from his
father, thus lowering his father's tax assessment. He also
apparently inherited a lease on the manor at Dundridge.

P.H. Haselton 1989, The English Ancestry of Joseph and Sylvester
Baldwin, p. 7. 1546 and 1552, Richard holds a lease on Dundridge, a
reputed manor. A true manor at this era was a holdover from the
feudal system in which the lord of the manor held significant rights
over his tenants. Dundridge would more appropriately be considered a
large farm whose fields extended to the edge of the village of St.
Leonards, in the Chiltern Hills about 4 miles away from Aston
Clinton. Muster Roll of 1522 gives population of 30-40. Circa 1580
Field Survey names twelve resident families including the Baldwins.
Cholesbury, a miles to the east of St. Leonards, was an independent
and true manor of only 165 acres.

P.H. Haselton 1989, The English Ancestry of Joseph and Sylvester
Baldwin, p. 17. Richard Baldwin apparently a successful farmer.
Death: FEB 1552/1553 in Dundridge, Aston Clinton Parish, Buckinghamshire, England
Note: Buried in the churchyard at Astron Clinton Parish.

Records show that this Baldwin family was present for some time
before Robert, but no identification of his father has been proved.

New England Genealogical Society Register 110, 310, 1956. Chesham
Manor Court Rolls show that Baldwins were in Chesham hamlet of
Bellingdon since the 13th century. Death of Robert Baldwin presented
in court at Chesham Bury 16 April 1537. Was owner of freelands and
tenements at Bellenden called Pygotts and Belchers, also at Dungrove
in Botley, Chesham. These properties deeded to younger son Richard.
In court 16 April 1538, John Baldwin, heir of Robert Baldwin, named.

A.V. Woodman 1959, New England Genealogical Society Register 113, 245-
248. From the Court Rolls of the Manor of Chesham come the following
records, no generational links necessarily specified.
I. John Baldwyne: given as an adjoining land owner in a Chesham
charter in the mid 13th century.
II. William Baldewyne, son of John Baldewyne. By agreement with
Matthew, Abbot of Missenden 29 October 1301, William Baldewyne is to
receive all lands and tenements recovered by the Abbot from William
in the Court of the King's Ben ch, to hold by rent of 3s per annum.
1314, William Baldewyne fined 6d for trespass in the lord's corn.
III. William and Thomas Baldewyne. Both (and others) were fined in
1330 1d for not being present at the court in their tithing. 1335
and again in 1337, free tenant William Baldewyne fined 3p for default
of suit of court. 1341, Thomas Baldewyne fined 3d for default.
IV. Richard Baldewyne. Served 1354-1367 as one of the parish
constables. 1368-1377 served as a tithing man. 1350, Richard
Baldewyne appeared in court to explain the absence of John le Longe.
V. Richard Baldewyne. Served 1379-1384 as constable.
VI. John Baldewyne. 7 October 1409. John Baldewyne, kinsman and
heir to Isabel Blakewell, wife of John Blakewell, sought to gain the
household called Moryngnes (Moorings) in Chesham held by John
Blakewell upon the death of his wife Isabel. John Baldewyne argued
that a husband under law could not continue to hold that property,
but that it reverted to the next of kin. Blakewell was fined 3d for
unjust deforecement. Isabel's sister Alice Webbe was coholder of the
tenement and 35 acres. Isabel and John Blakewell had a son John
Blakewell who would have been Isabel's heir, in which case her
widowed husband would have held the land until his death. But if
John Blakewell Jr. died, then the interest of John Blakewell Sr.
would have been abrogated. 1421, John Baldewyne fined 2d for
brewing. Sworn in for tithing that year. 1424 and 1429, on the
homage. He died b efore Easter 1442 when the heir of John Baldewyne
was fined 2d for default.
VII. John Baldewyne. 1421, sworn in for tithing presumably at age
12, hence born circa 1409. He was the aforementioned heir of John
Baldewyne, his father. 13 April 1467, was chief tithing man of
Belynder; he held office for several years. 1468, John Baldwyn and
William Bacheler, the two "most aged and best" in Belenden, appointed
to certify the survey of glebes (church owned revenue producing
lands) and tithes belonging to Leicester Abbey. 1483, a will (now
missing) of John Baldwyn was proved.
VIII. John Baldwyn. 1482, Henry Webbe, son of John Webbe the
younger, age 15 (hence born 1467), and his property given to custody
of John Baldwyn and Henry Tokefeld. 1484, John Baldwyn fined 4d for
default. 1485, John Baldwyn juror as in 1503. Not in taxation rolls
of 1524.
IX. Robert Baldwyn. First Baldwyn at Dundridge which he may have
leased. 1497, Robert rented 1/2 acre at Colyerscrosse for 2d per
annum. 1510, rented part of Sparrowespece at 6d per annum. 1525,
his Aston Clinton lands valued at £2 and goods at £13, for tax of
6s6d. As part of a change in his taxes, it was noted that Robert's
son had married within the year. His death presented to court 16
April 1536 where it was noted that lands at Dungrove in Botley had
been given to his younger son Richard Baldwyn. 16 April 1537 court
papers show that free lands at Dungrove and an acre of land
Sperrowacre had been given to son Richard. Robert also owned a
pightie (small parcel of land), 1/2 acre, lying near Colyerscrosse.
John Baldwyn was next heir and of full age. Sons of Robert:
1) John Baldwyn of the Hale (a part of the manor of Wivelsgate,
which passed to John's son George who died in 1576).
2) Thomas Baldwin of the Forrens of Wendover.
3) Richard Baldwin of Dundridge.

William F. Baldwin, [email protected], 14 June 1997. April 1536,
court records show that Robert Baldwin held freely certain lands and
tenements at Bellenden and others at Dungrove in Botley -- these
given by deed presented in court to son Richard. Richard also
received an acre of land called Sperrowacre in April 1537. John of
the Hayle was established as his son and next heir, being of full age
-- this was of import to the Lord of the Manor who held the
responsibility of the obligations of the tenure system and who would
have necessarily assumed that the properties went to Robert's heir
John. In this time, it was generally impossible to pass land titles
via wills. (Referenced from P.H. Haselton 1989, The English Ancestry
of Joseph and Sylvester Baldwin, p. 10.) The Statute of Wills,
allowing transfer of land by will, was not passed by Parliament until
1540.

P.H. Haselton 1989, The English Ancestry of Joseph and Sylvester
Baldwin, p. 11. 1509: Robert Baldwin one of original trustees of
the Chapel Trust in St. Leonards. 1522: Muster Roll shows Robert
Baldwin resident at Dundridge, with 20£ in goods, but no land
recorded.

P.H. Haselton 1989, The English Ancestry of Joseph and Sylvester
Baldwin, p. 12. The evidence linking Hugh Baldwin to this family is
inadequate to show that he is a son of Robert.

Wayne Dunn, post to [email protected], 29 March 1998. Richard
Aylesbury was the son of Robert Le Aylesbury (1386 Oterasfee,
Buckinghamshire, England - ?). Robert was the son of Roger Aylesbury
(1359 Oterasfee, Buckinghamshire, England - ).

H.F. Seversmith 1939, Colonial Families of Long Island, New York, and
Connecticut, Being the Ancestry and kindred of Herbert Furman
Seversmith, vol. 1, pp. 250-253. Robert Baldwin was the earliest
resident of Dundridge and only one of that surname. Apparently of
Wendover, he moved from Aston Clinton to Dundrige in or before 1528.
1509. Robert Baldwyn paid 6s 8d to the King for a license to
rent 80 acres of land and 12 acres of wood in Chesham,
Buckinghamshire, to Thomas and Alice Whelpley.
12 July 1518. Robert Baldwin ordered to be brought for
testimony in a case to be heard before the Court at Westminister
In 1528, Thomas Wedon and John Tokevyle brought action against
Robert Baldwyn, "late of Aston Clynton, sernior, husbandman, alias of
Dunrigge, parish of Aston Clynton" in a plea of debt regarding 10
quarters of wheat evaluated at £16.
1536. John Long of London brought an action against Robert
Baldwyn and his wife Agnes, executirx of the will of William Dolte of
Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, regarding an unpaid debt of £50.
Apparently they claimed they had no funds and could not be found by
the Sheriff to be forced into court.
Children: Robert, Richard, John, Thomas, and possibly Hugh.

Cecil L. Peters, 10 November 2000. Robert as the earliest ancestor
of the Baldwin family is disputed by Gary Boyd Roberts, English
Origins of New England Families.
