Interesting!I did not find Stephen and Pheba in the 1860 Buchanan VA census on Ancestry.com, but I did find them in 1870, where he appears to be 35 years old, or born abt. 1835.I wonder if this is the same Stephen Balden (Baldwin) who is living near a Jacob Balden and an Elisha Balden in Russell Co., VA in 1850?That Stephen was age 21 (b. 1829) and Phoebe was 17.This Stephen and Phoebe were listed next to my Solomon Baldwin's purported half-brothers, Andrew Mitchel and Enoch Mitchel, who were sons of the Layton and Rebecca Mitchel found on the same page in Russell VA 1850.This Stephen and Phoebe had a son, Elisha, born August 16, 1853.
There was also a Stephen Baldwin age 39 (b. 1811) in Scott, VA in 1850, who was married to Polly and had children Noah and Nancy.
Gosh, I wonder how many Stephen Baldwins were living in that same area and time frame? They must be descended from the Stephen Baldwin who along with Elisha, William, and John Baldwin were among the earliest white residents in Ashe County, NC.
