Marcia,
Catherine appears to be the daughter of William Baldy (Balde, Baldee, Baldie, Baldi) and Lavina Helmer. She is with them in the 1860 and 1870 censuses. She was 8 and 18 respectively. In 1870, Lavina Helmer Baldy was widowed and Catherine, John, and Ellen were still at home with her.
In 1860, the household includes the parents, George W. 18, Horatio, 16, Louisa 13, John 10, Catherine 8, and Ellen 4.The 1850 census reveals the following:William 35, Lovina 38, Mary 14, Nancy 12, George 8, Horatio 6, Louisa 3, and John 3/12.All were born in NY.
A Helmer genealogy reveals only two of Lavina's children:Mary who married Jeremiah Spohn, and Nancy who married Philip Spohn. My own research into censues shows that George married a Cornelia; Horatio married Josephine Jacobson; John marriedan Ida.I don't know what became of Louisa and Ellen. Most of the family remained in the Herkimer County area.A branch of the Baldie clan moved to Ionia County, Michigan.I have somewhere some notes abstracted from old church records. If I find William's parents and any additional children for him and Lavina, I'll let you know. Most of the Herkimer Baldie lines descend from Henry Baldy and his wife Margaret Rasbach. As noted earlier, the spelling of Baldy has numerous variations, including Bald, and Balding. What was the source of your knowledge that Catherine Stuper's maiden name was Baldy?Lavina Baldy died before 1880.She and William have will records or estate records in Herkimer County.Hope this helps.
