I am also interested in the Belk, Belcu, and Balk families. My paternal grandmother was a Belk, Florence Belk Hodgesfrom Fayette, County, Alabama. Her Belk anscestors came to Fayette County from North or South Carolina. Some sources say this family was from England or Wales, but I think that this family may have originated in Romania, Bulgaria or Hungary and later emigrated to England or Wales. This would have been back in the 1700's.I think they were Romanian and that the name was originally Belcu, or Belku, perhaps. I have seen the name Balk also spelled Balkh and was used in some of the Turkic and Central Asian countries and may be a word that has something to do with mountains or a mountainous area. Any help will be appreciated on info. about the Belcu family.
