Re: Balon family in PA and NY from Polan
Dear Friends and possible relatives,
The Balon my father descended from was his grandmother's (Antonia Klapotski or Klapocka) second husband, Wilhelm (William) Balon, who adopted her two daughters, one being his mother, Wladyslawa Barbara Balon, born Krakow, Poland, 1883. My Grandmother, nicknamed "Flossie", came to USA in 1900 or 1901 with her sister. William had a brother in NYC. Antonia immigrated later, and died about 1918 in PA. William was turned away at Ellis Island, in spite of the fact that his brother's sons, lawyers, tried to help him get in, and so he died in Poland (then part of Russia). My grandmother Balon married Joseph Matusiewicz (1880, Krasnopol in Mazuria, then Russia). The Matusiewicz family moved to Denver in 1918 and there became US citizens, shortening the name to "Matus". I do not know Wladyslawa's (Flossie's) sister's name, but her mother Antonia was of noble lineage -- "she was Royalty!" Grandmother used to say.
