Re: Australian Bamseys
Sorry that we Australian Bamseys - or some of us at least - are infrequent visitors to this page Ed. But you seem to be a regular so hopefully you will see this even after almost a year. The Alison who initiated this thread is my daughter.
I'm afraid we have no knowledge of the Bamseys in Devon you mentioned or of the visit of your cousin to New Zealand and Australia. Perhaps one of the reasons is that we have very little detail of our family tree. Like reading 'War and Peace' it's one of those things I keep promising myself to do but.... We are not even sure that our forebears came from Devon but that seems most likely. (It's the only place in the world where I haven't had to spell my surname on checking in to a hotel!)It seems that many Bamseys, along with lots of other Devonians, moved to Wales towards the end of the nineteenth century when industrialisation there opened up employment prospects. So our family may have come from there more recently.
But we have been in Australia for a century or so. In that time we haven't had any direct contact with other Bamseys to my knowledge. Time to remedy that but first I need to attend to the family details. As soon as I have some I'll post them here. I travel a good deal (eg in NY next week) and my children (foreign service kids) also have the bug. So if we do find out who we are and how we relate to others we'll look forward to meeting some of them.
