Hi Sharon,
Thanks for posting this. I see this mistake constantly when I look at Barbee genealogies.
William Barbee b 3 April 1751 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co VA was son of Thomas Barbee (the younger) and Margaret Fant. He moved moved sequentially to North Carolina, then on to perhaps Butler, definitely Ross and Jackson Counties OH and died in Jackson Co OH in 1826. The probate for his will was filed April 22, 1826. Unfortunately it appears the book his will is in has disappeared. His daughter Casiah (bn 1796) was my 3xg-grandmother.
William's first wife (whose name I have yet to uncover despite vigorous shoveling) died by 1820, when he is living alone for the Jackson Co OH Census. In 1821 he married Elizabeth Armsworthy, and while some sources say they had two children I have not been able to locate them.
William could have been married three times, as there is an unusually long gap between the births of Sarah (1785) and Casiah (1796). I cannot find him in the 1790 or 1810 census, so I am not even certain I have a complete list of his children. At present I have:
Hazel Barbee 1774 – 1853 bn NC (male)
Nancy Barbee 1775 –
William Barbee 1775 – 1836 NC
Daniel Barbee 1777 – 1846
Mary Barbee 1779 –
Elizabeth Barbee 1781 – 1811
James Barbee 1781 –
Sarah Barbee 1785 –
Casiah Barbee 1796 – 1835 OH
For what it's worth, I find a record of a William Barbee/Mary Smith marriage in the book Shawnee Heritage by Noel Schultz and Don Greene. Unless the dates are off it's not *my* William, but it may be that some other person out there is confusing this Mary Smith/William Barbee marriage with your Lincoln Co TN Barbee/Smith marriage:
Mary Smith was b c 1772 daughter of John Smith, an Irishman adopted by the Chalakatha (Shawnee) and Wabethe Otter a Chalakatha woman. About 1790 Mary Smith m William Barbee. They were parents of William, Sarah, Susannah, Mary, Lucy and Melinda. Mary Smith Barbee died about 1815.
Mary Smith's grandmother was Wabawasenaw (White Otter) b 1720 PA d 1766 of smallpox in OH.
Happy rooting and if ANYONE has a clue who *my* William Barbee married about 1774 I'd dance a jig!
Deb
