Antonino Barbera, b. 10 March 1885, Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto
Antonino Barbera, the son of Stephano Barbera and Maria Torre, was born in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, Messina, Sicily, Italy according to his birth certificate.
He came to the US about 1908 and settled in Syracuse, NY.On 7 February 1910, he married Santa Crisafulli in St. Peter's church on James Street. In the marriage application on file in the Onondaga County courthouse, his name appears as Antonino "Barbieri," the son of Stephano "Barbieri" and Maria "Turri." The bride's name is also misspelled as "Santo Gresifulli" but notation is made that the name should be "Crisifuli."Still wrong but close enough; the bride's parents' names agree with what we know to be true.
By 1920, the couple had six children.Santa died shortly after giving birth to their last child, a boy named Stephano born on 13 May 1920.He also died shortly thereafter.
Antonino took the four oldest children, all girls, back to Sicily with him, leaving the youngest, my mother-in-law, to be adopted by his wife's sister and her husband. He remained in Sicily but the girls all eventually returned to Syracuse, NY.
Any information on the Barbera family would be greatly appreciated.
