My mother's fathers name was Martin,he had brothers Fred and James and a sister Margaret McNeal Holycross,Also a younger sister than married a man named Benjamin? Sing, from around Richland MO.I haven't been able to trace them.None of the brothers McNeal had sons that had sons.My Uncle Archie McNeal my mother Verns's brother never had any kids.
Martin McNeals mother was Elizabeth Ann "gramma Lid"Atwell. She married when she was about 16 and was widowed by the time she was 30 or younger with five kids to raise.
HerHusband J Edward McNeal was from Scotland, much older and was murdered April 1 1884 or 85 in Iberia, Miller County. The murder sas over a store debt that ggpa said he did not owe.It was for tobacco and ggpa said I don't use it nor do any of my boys. The general merchandise merchant, a Mr Rowden, accosted my ggpa in the blacksmith shop.According to the Grand Jury ggPa said,"He got me boys, shot me in the entrils, call the constable have him arrested."He diedtwo days later.
Mr Rowden on his death bed confessed to 5 other murders.
Grandma Lid sued MR Rowden for support of her children, but there was a change of venue and the murderer was acquited.
Edward J McNeal, may have been James McNeal of Scotland. He first shows up here in 1870 census in his future father in laws household census as a worker.Married the next year.Lied about his age on the 70 census and then told what was closer to the truth on the 80 census. If you know Iberia cemetaries,He and Granma Lid are both buried in Billingley out near the Tavern Creek south of Iberia.I have never seen thier graves. She remarried several times, once to a Mayfield.
