Genealogy and Privacy
I am posting this message in several locations (and I do have Bartelt ancestors) to raise the awareness of researchers, like myself, who desire to share their research with others. Please be aware that identity theft is a real threat, and Congress has even specifically considered genealogy research posted on the Internet as a contributor to that threat.
In the course of your research and publishing of that research, please be attentive to protecting the current and future generations from unscrupulous people harvesting information from the Internet. Don't think it can happen to you? Type your phone number into Google and see what comes up! Then search for your children's names and see what you find.
When you come across a site that has published information about your family, contact the webmaster and notify them of the NGS Standards for Guidelines For Publishing Web Pages On The Internet (http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/comstandweb.htm)
Post privacy statements on your websites, and restrict access to information about living individuals
