Sorry about the delayed reply. I was waiting until I had been in the UK, to do some research in the Lincoln archives. This I did in mid December. Most of my work was confirming my brother's research of 12 years ago.
Where I am at, is that my family lived in the Crowle area from the mid 1600's and moved to Hull via Howden, towards the end of the 1800's. The earliest reference I have at the moment, dates from the late 1600's and I have a pretty good line from there to the present day.
It is clear that Bartles have been resident in several parts of Lincolnshire (round Scunthorpe, Grimsby, Caistor, Lincoln City, Wragby and Bourne in the South) for several hundred years.
I am also aware of branches in Norfolk, Co. Durham, South Wales and Monmouthshire, from a number of unconnected references. There are various forms of the name, due to illiteracy before 1800. One of my forebears spelt his name differently (or the vicar did) for successive christenings of his children!
If any of this is relevant to your interest, let me know.
