Martha Bartlett, widow (of Burrell?) 1840 Burwell Bartlet was listed in the 113th district of Hancock County, Ga with three male children under the age of five. Martha Bartlett married Joseph L. Tate in Hancock county, Ga. 9-8-1844. The 1850 Hancock Co. census shows the Joseph L. Tate family in the 113th district (page 29).Joseph was 49 and born in New York.Martha was 37 and born in Georgia.Children were Joseph 15, born Ga; Alberto (?) 13, born Ga.; Clinton 11, born Ga.; Branch 9, born Ga; Martha J. 7, born Ga. and Laura Ann 4, born Ga.All the children’s surnames were “dittoed” under TATE, so they really may have been Joseph L Tate's children by a first marriage. However, the first three named children would all have been under the age of five in 1840.The reader must decide whether to pursue the theory that these children might be Burwell Bartlett’s orphans. The 1860 census shows no Joseph L. Tate family in Georgia. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
