Thanks for replying to my earlier message. If Edmund wasn't Richard's father was he called Robert as the text below states? Also on the bartlettgenealogy.org site of which I believe you are the author or one of the authors, in the History of the Bartlett name you list Edmund Barttelot Esq. (died: 1591) as Richard Bartlett (Newbury, Mass.) father?
The below text is from: worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com
·Name: Edmund BARTTELOT
·Birth: ABT. 1510 in Ernley, West Sussex, England 1 2
·Death: ABT. 1591 in Ernley, West Sussex, England 3
Acquired estates in the parish of Erley, Sussex from the Fenner family (Dallaway's Western Sussex, i.27) who had held them during the greater part of the sixteenth century. He is not named in the pedigree recorded by his grandson, Edward Bartlett of Earnley, and Redland, at the Visitation of 1633/34, (Harleian MS 1562), but is there described as the fourth son of Richard Barttelot and Elizabeth Gates.
The descendants in England disagree with this father being named Edmund, they have him listed as Robert. "Robert Bartelot/Bartlett of Fordington Manor, Dorset, had a son Richard baptised there May 17, 1592 and a son Robert baptised there May 27, 1603, both of whom sailed to America, Richard on the "William & Frances" in 1632 Robert on the "Anne" 1623. There was another Bartlett baptised at Fordington with the name John, 1605 who later married another Warren girl on 25 January 1634, and he may also have been a son of Robert. Richard B. baptised in 1592 had a son also named Richard who was baptised at Tincleton Church, Fordington, Jan 4th 1622, and of course that baptism date fits comfortably with the birthdate of Richard B. son of Richard B. as recorded in the family Bible of the American family (Oct 31 1621).
"FOREFATHERS AND DESCENDANTS OF WILLARD AND GENEVIEVE WILSON BARTLETT AND OF ALLIED FAMILIES", By Genevieve W. Bartlett, 1952, PS. 3,8,9,12,13; records Edmund as the 4th son of Richard Barttelot of Stopham.

Richard came from England in 1623 to the Virginia Colonies (Passanger & Immigration List Index, Gale Research Co., Vol 1, A-G, Ed by P. Wm. Filby, pg. 88). He is listed as being sent from England as a "vagrant, from the Bridewell" (The Complete Book of Emigrants, 1607-1776, Sect. II, chap 19, 1624, pg 48)
The family home in England was called "Fordington Manor". There are records of baptism in Fordington Manor Church reading: Robert Bartelot of Fordington Manor, Dorset, had a son Richard baptised there May 17, 1592 and a son Robert baptised there May 27, 1603.
Richard is shown living at Warwick Squeak, in Virginia on February 16, 1624 (The Complete Book of Emigrants 1607-1660, By Peter W. Coldham, Gen Pub Co, 1987, pg. 42).
He settled Bartletts Cove, (Opposite Amesbury Ferry) in 1635 where he settled with his brothers John and Thomas, and his sons Richard and Cristopher, and a Daughter Joanna. He was one of the earliest settlers at Newbury in 1635 (the year of its incorporation) ("Burke's American Families with British Ancestry", 1983, p 2551)
"Among the first band of English emigrants who, having wintered at Ipswich, came in the spring of 1635 to plant the town of Newbury, was a John Spencer. He had been the first representative for Ipswich to the General Court at Boston and became also the first representative for Newbury. He remained only a few years in Newbury. When disposing of his estate there, he returned to England about the time of, and perhaps in connection , with the English expedition, which in 1655 captured Jamaica. Mr. Spencer had 50 acres more or less of upland on the neck of the "greate River" which it is presumed is the River Parker. Disposing of these lands, he deeded in 1648 to various friends, among them, "8 acres to Richard Bartlett" (The Newsletter of the Sons & Daughters of the First Settlers of Newbury, Summer 1995, Vol XIV, No 2, pg 14).
Richard Bartlett was a cordwainer by trade; one who makes shoes and other articles of leather (Burke's American Families, pg 2551). Original spelling of the name is Bartellot.
He brought the "Breeches Bible" (so called from the translation of the word for the original garment worn by Adam & Eve) to America. The Bible is dated 1578 on the Preface page, on the front margin of the page on which the 4th chapter is commenced, is the following writing: Richard Bartlett Bought this booke Anno Domyni 1612. At the end of the Prayer Book is a blank page on which is written in handwriting the children's birth records. The noncupative will of Richard Bartlett Sr. of Newbury, MA was proved & recorded in an Ipswich, MA court (28:7:1647) on 28 July 1647 in Ipswich Deeds Vol. 1, leaf 25.
There is a family tradition that Richard sailed to America on the "William & Frances" in 1632 and his brother Robert sailed to America in 1632 on the "Anne". This has not been proved.

Standard work. Includes lists of ships to Bermuda, Barbados, and continental North America. Indexes family names. Names of Jews are excerpted in Adler, no. 61. Care should be taken when using Hotten. There are two versions, one with accurate text and index, the other with poor text and the better index which does not entirely match the text. Therefore it is essential that only the following editions be used: all 1874 printings; 1931, New York; 1935, New York; and the G.P.C. printings from 1974 on. G.P.C.'s earlier printings had the poor text and the better index.
