I now believe that Thomas BARTLETT (c1730-1806) of Fauquier and Harrison Co, VA came from Richmond Co, VA and was the son of Thomas BARTLETT (c1705-1767/83).See below for details. Please let me know what you think.
As many of you know a Thomas BARTLETT left a Will dated 1767 that was recorded in 1783 Richmond Co, VA.In it he names his wife and children. His four daughters were all married. His sons included John, to whom he left his 110 acre plantation (it was adjacent to the EIDSONs in the center of Richmond Co.), Thomas, James, Joseph and Elisha.Elisha and his sisters stayed in Richmond Co, but there are no more records of the other brothers. With married sisters in 1767, the BARTLETT brothers were probably married and had families, too - where did they go???
I have long suspected that Thomas, son of Thomas BARTLETT (Will 1767), was the Thomas BARTLETT (c1730-1806) who "showed up" in Fauquier Co, VA about 1768 with wife Anne and 7 or 8 children, age infant to 16 or 17.There has even been speculation that Thomas' wife, Anne, was Anne SETTLE.This conclusion was drawn because Henry SETTLE was a neighbor of Thomas BARTLETT (1767 Will), and in his 1770 Will (Richmond Co, VA) he named his daughter Anne BARTLETT, and granddaughter Joanna BARTLETT.Anne SETTLE was born in 1728, so the ages fit, too.But Thomas BARTLETT (c1730-1806) had NO daugher or granddaughter named Joanna (in Fauquier or Harrison Co, VA)
New info: Bob Bartley and I have shared some records and determined that there was a John BARTLEY who lived in Culpeper Co, VA from 1760 to 1791 - John BARTLETT is in a number of records during that period, but we've found no John BARTLETT records in Culpeper Co, VA.However a Richmond Co, VA 1788 Deed has a "John BARTLETT, Planter, of St Marks Parish, Culpeper Co, VA" selling 90 acres of the land he inherited from his father Thomas BARTLETT, dec'd, in Richmond Co, VA; so clearly a John BARTLETT lived in Culpeper Co, VA in 1788.Bob and I have concluded that John BARTLEY and John BARTLETT of Culpeper Co (1760-1791) are the same person. As it turns out John BARTLEY moved to Fluvanna Co, VA where his 1807 will was recorded in 1808.This John BARTLEY had a wife Anne, a daughter Joanna, and two granddaughters named Anne Settle _____.Clearly John is the son of Thomas BARTLETT (1767 Will) who married Anne SETTLE, daugher of Henry SETTLE.
John BARTLETT/Y is a definite link from Richmond Co, VA BARTLETTs to migrations west and up the Rappa. River. He lived in Culpeper Co in the fork of the Rappa River.Culpeper is on the south side of the Rappa River, and Fauquier Co is adjacent, on the north side of the Rappa. River. I'm now more inclined than ever to believe that Thomas BARTLETT (c1730-1806) also went up the Rappa River, and is the son of Thomas BARTLETT of Richmond Co, VA.If so his wife Anne was the daughter of one of the Richmond Co, VA BARTLETT neighbors. But which one?(John EIDSON had a dau/Anne...)
I would very much appreciate any other conjecture on this issue and/or any opinions on what happened to the other two Richmond Co, VA BARTLETT boys - James and Joseph...
