Hello Pat John Barttelot was treasurer to the Earl of Arundel. He married Joan de Stopham, heiress to the Stopham Estate, in 1379. He is the first known to be buried in Stopham Church (in spite of a lot of other postings about the Barttelots that I have seen on the Net) and his brass plate (spelt "Bartelot") dated 1428 is to be seen on the church floor (under the carpet). The original family still live at Stopham and the current baronet is Sir Brian Walter de Stopham Barttelot. The family name as spelt was finalised in Elizabethan times. Before that it can be seen in the church variously spelt as Bertlot, Bartlot and Bartelot. The name corrupted to "Bartlett" elsewhere later. The family originally came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066 and the name is shown as "Berteuilay" on the Battel (now spelt "Battle") Abbey Roll which lists about 600 of King William's more important companions.I hope this information is useful to you.
