I am trying to learn more about the BARTLETTs of Frederick Co, VA.About the earliest settler of that area that I know of is William BARTLETT (1735-1777), son of William BARTLETT of Spotsylvania Co, VA.William II m Mary CRANE in 1752 or 57 in Spotsylvania Co, and there are records of him there up to 1761.The first record I have of him in Frederick Co is Witness to a 1771 Deed.Berkeley Co was split off from Frederick Co in 1773,.There is a 1774 Berkeley Co deed from Geo Washington to William BARTLETT, and another 1774 deed before William will in 1777.He had 4 sons Henry/Harry, Frederick, James and John, all apparently b after 1759 (his will references gifts when they become 18...); two daughters Nancy Ann and Elizabeth. Were they all b in St George Par, Spotsylvania Co, VA before they moved to Frederick Co??Abt when did they move?It looks like Frederick and James BARTLETT and their mother Mary (nee CRANE) and Nancy Ann went to Jefferson Co, KY (Nancy Ann m there 1786 Henry DITTO; James m there 1788 Charlotte ASHBY; Frederick m there 1796 to Elizabeth EDWARDS).How did this work?Did Mary CRANE BARTLETT remarry?Did the widow and 2 sons and daughter join a wagon train to KY???It appear John BARTLETT enlisted in the RevWar in 1777 at Winchester, Frederick Co, VA (a popular recruiting/mustering place for that area). He also went to Jefferson Co, KY after the war (later he d.in TN).Did he go with the rest of the family. If they all stayed in Berkeley Co until after the war (I guess not too many folks migrated during the war years..), then the "boys" would have become "men" by then (certainly fighting in a war does that). So it appears that perhaps they went to Jefferson Co, KY to settle on land John earned in the RevWar??
The odd man out here is Henry BARTLETT who stayed in Frederick Co, VA - he m 1797 Frederick Co, VA Elizabeth DAVIS; and they are in the Frederick Co 1810 and 1820 census - with lots of children.Does anyone have Henry and Elizabeth's children's names and birth dates??This is the famous Henry BARTLETT who traveled to OH and KY (to visit his mother (she d abt 1810) and siblings) in 1805 and kept a very detailed diary which documented a very good picture of frontier life at that time.
Of course, I'd like to know more about these families - and particularly learn of their modern day descendants.
But my main motive now is the other BARTLETTs in Frederick Co, VA - what family did THEY belong to???
Jacob/Joseph C BARTLETT m 1785 Fred. Co Nancy S BROWN James BARTLETT m 1789 Fred. Co Sally R LAMKIN (looks about the same age as James above; but the James above had probably already gone to KY???); anyway a James BARTLETT is a 1790 Fred. Co Deed witness and is in the 1810 Frederick Co, VA census (both he and wife b bef 1765 [could this have been the James BARTLETT of Richmond Co, VA who reported his father's will in 1783 in Richmond Co and then disappeared??? - perhaps he finally went west like his brother's Thomas to Fauquier/Harrison, and John to Culpeper/Fluvanna??] Rebecca BARTLETT m1791 Fred. [NOTE*** there in a Lydia BARTLETT 72 b Berkeley Co, VA alone in the 1850 Floyd Co, VA census living very near Laurg [Leroy] BARTLETT George BARTLETT b 1765-84 in 1810 Fred. Does anyone have a hint as to how these BARTLETTs fit together?Has anyone researched the records in Frederick Co, VA??
