I posted this as a reply, but thought I should give it a new title and repost it. jvb
My thesis now is: Garner BARTLETT b a1750 VA m Ellender; they were in 1765 Loudoun Co tithables; 1782 Loudoun Co Pers Prop Tax List; 1787 Berkeley Co lease to Garner, mentions his sons, William and Reubin; then there's an 1800 Botetourt Co Land Grant; 1810 Montgomery Co census and 1811 Montgomery Co Garner BARTLETT Will listing ch Wm, Reuben, John, Thomas and Lydia TOWNSLEY, and 3 not named (who???).This shows Garner in Loudoun Co before and during RevWar; moving west after the War; then southwest about 1800 - all very common migration paths and times - we should look for others who traveled with them...
William BARTLETT m 1800 Frederick Co Lydia POWELL (from 1850 Floyd census, Lydia was b 1778 Berkeley Co).I believe his father, Garner, was ready to leave Frederick/Berkeley Co area about this time, and William was old enough and wanted to marry and stay - probably on land either his father and/or her father gave them.Anyway, William is in 1800 Berkeley Co tax list; and a William BARKLEY (I need to look at that page) is in 1810 Berkeley Co 1810 census with 5 ch b 1800-10 (very compatible with an 1800 m).William BARLETT (no T) is in 1820 Frederick Co census 211210-12010.They then followed the rest of the family to Montgomery Co... 1830 Montgomery Co census 11100001-00011001; 1831 Floyd Co Pers Prop Tax List (Floyd formed 1831 from Montgomery); 1840 and 1850 Floyd Co census have Lydia BARTLETT, both times close to Leroy BARTLETT (I haven't seen the 1840 image yet, but will soon). We need to find the William BARTLETT will, estate, etc records which are obviously in the Floyd Co1830s.From the combined census info it looks like they had 10 children.
William's brother, Reuben, was also in this area: 1810, 1820 and 1830 Montgomery Co census (remember I noted above that their father, Garner, brought his family to this area about 1800, including Reuben, Thomas, John and Lydia who m 1807 Montgomery Co a TOWNSLEY). Further Reuben is also on 1831 Floyd Co Pers Prop Tax List and in 1840 Floyd Co census (age 60-70).I believe Sarah who m 1827 Montgomery Co Henry KING and Samuel who m 1831 Montgomery Co Mahala THRASH are Reubin's ch.Reubin probably had 4 other ch, one a male b 1810-15.
Also William and Reuben's brother, Thomas BARTLETT is in 1820 Montgomery Co census 300010-01100 (it looks like his wife is deceased), but I have not located more records for Thomas. Also I cannot figure out what happened to their brother, John…
I am very confident that Leroy is the son of one of these BARTLETT brothers, who are the sons of Garner BARTLETT.I know of no other BARTLETTs, or BARTLETT records, in this area that don't tie into this family.Based on the fact that William's widow, Lydia, is living next door to Leroy in 1840 and 1850, I'm putting Leroy in the William BARTLETT family - that still leaves his 9 brothers and sisters to identify.
Some of the early movements of this BARTLETT family can be better understood by researching the annual Pers Prop Tax Lists and Land Tax Lists for Berkeley, Frederick, Botetourt and Montgomery Counties in the 1785 to 1810 timeframe. We also need the Will and other estate/probate and land records from Floyd Co in 1831 to 1850 time frame to determine the children.
As always, I welcome any other ideas on how to put these records together; and I VERY MUCH would appreciate any additional records anyone might have on these BARTLETTs.
