Robert I am descended from Martha Bartlett, b. 1795 in Weymouth, Eng, dau. of William and Elizabeth, m. to William Hodge. Martha and William moved to Canada in mid 1800s, and settled in Newmarket where William established a Tin Shop business. Am looking for further information about that Bartlett family, and also for the family of Betty Bartlett, b. 1738 in England who was married to Joseph Jerrard and resided in Chideock Dorset. Their grandaughter Mary Jerrard married John Newbery and emmigrated to Canada, 1840, and settled near Richmond Hill, north of Toronto. Betty's father, Samuel Bartlett, was aprominent citizen of Chideock, serving as Church Warden and one of the chief smugglers there in the latter half of the 18th century. This Bartlett family carried on with the smuggling business into the 19th century.
