I can give you information on Joanna Harbourt, grandmother of William W. Bartlett.Mary Joanna Harbourt was b. abt 1770 in either NJ or VA and married John Helm Jr. in abt 1792 in Loudoun or Frederick Co. VA.They moved to Jefferson/Shelby Co. Ky in abt. 1800-1802.Their daughter, Mary "Polly" Helm married William Bartlett, and when Polly died, William married Polly's younger sister, Zylpha.
Mary Joanna Harbourt was the dau. of Peter Harbourt Sr.(aka Herbert/Harbert)who was born 1744 in Monmouth Co.,NJ.Peter's wife was Mary.Peter died in 1802 and his will was probated in Winchester, Frederick Co. VA.He named in his will his wife Mary, daughter Mary Helm ( this was Joanna), and sons John, Thomas, Paul and his wife Margaret (Kinister/Keneaster) and Peter Jr. and his wife Catherine.See www.spaldinggenealogy.com for history of the Herbert family and how they came from NJ to Loudoun Co. VA in the early 1770's. Peter Harbourt obtained two land grants in then Berkeley Co. Va (now Morgan Co. WVa), in 1799 on Third Hill Mtn. and Sleepy Creek. The deeds and survey are on the UVA website for Northern Neck land grants - but they are misindexed as Harcourt. (The names on the actual doucment is Peter Harbourt though). This land is on or very near the present Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area in Morgan Co. WVA.
Peter Sr.'s son Paul bought land in Jefferson Co. Ky in 1822 with his brother in law, Henry Kinister from James Bartlett.See http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cst/bartlett/djasjef2.htmhttp://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cst/bartlett/djasjef2.htm
On that transaction, the following Bartletts and Helms signed as witnesses:Th’s HELM,Peter HELM,William BARTLETT and Meredith HELM.I believe these are Joanna Harbourt Helm's sons (she had sons with these names) and that William Bartlett is her son-in-law.
Joanna's brother Thomas Harbourt/Harbert was on the 1820 and 1830 census in Morgan Co. VA, but then on the 1840 and later census in Jefferson Co., Ky.He had a daughter May or Mary who married Amos Hall.He had a son Wilson W. Harbert who became a doctor in Ky.Wilson married first Rose Hall McFarland and second Sarah?
Joanna's brother Peter Jr. was on the 1820, 1830 census in Morgan Co VA, then to Jefferson Co. OH in 1840-1860 census. Her brother John is on 1810 census of Berkeley Co. (became Morgan Co in 1820) with his mother, but then I can't find him.I believe my husband's gggfather, Israel Harbourt b. 1818 VA, married in Jefferson Co. OH, d. 1854 OH, his children ended up in Daviess Co. Ky - was a son of either Peter Jr. or Joanna's brother John. There is more...
Peter Sr.'s father was Paul Herbert b. 1715 in Monmouth Co. NJ - don't know his mother's name.Paul had at least 3 children, maybe 4.He had John [maybe John Walter] in 1742, Peter 1744 and Rebecca?.The son John or John Walter moved to South Carolina to start a Quaker colongy there in the early 1770's.About that same time, Peter moved to Loudoun Va but Peter was a member of the Baptist church in Virginia.
Paul's partents were Dr. Walter Herbert b. 1679 NY or NJ andhis second wife, Sarah Tilton.Sarah Tilton's father, John, was one of the 12 original patentees of East Jersey - he was a Quaker. Her mother was Rebecca Terry.Dr. Herbert was originally Baptist, but must have become Quaker as he and all of his children are mentioned throughout Quaker records in Monmouth Co. at the time.Dr. Walter Herbert and his first wife Deborah had one son, Walter Jr.Dr. Walter Herbert and his second wife, Sarah Tilton had the following children: Esther (married James Jeremy Irons and died young); Lydia (married Wm. Brewer); Sarah (m. Edward Patterson Worth); Rebecca (married John Curtis; Meribah (married David Curtis); Deborah (did not marry - at least not bef. 1755); Timothy (married Deborah Corlies) and Paul (married ?).Dr. Walter Herbert married a 3rd time to Phoebe Mount late in life (1741) after his 2nd wife Sarah died.He had no children with Phoebe. He left a will in 1755 by that time his sons Walter, Timothy and Paul must have died because he named their children (his grandchildren) as beneficiaries. He did not name Rebecca Curtis or her children - not sure why as her children at least were still living then. He named all of his other daughters (except Esther who had died).Children of Paul were shown as John, Peter and Rebecca. However, there was a Walter Herbert b. 1742 who moved to S.C. whose descendants say was a son of Paul Herbert. His name could have been John Walter or Walter John.Notably, Dr. Walter's son Walter Jr. did not name his sons Walter. Walter Jr. had children: George, John, Isaac, Timothy and Deborah.
It is believed that Dr. Walter Herbert's grandparents were Walter Herbert and Mary Bridget Barnes. There is a record of their marriage in Gravesend, Long Island, This older Walter Herbert was b. 1615-1617 in Wiltshire Eng, and was of Welsh descent - some say from Sir William ap Herbert, the Black Knight. However, as this Walter died in 1668, he is not the father of Dr. Walter Herbert b. 1679, but could be his grandfather.Walter and Bridget did have at least 2 sons: Francis and Thomas - as these are shown in documented records living with Bridget after Walter died. It is also established that Dr. Walter Herbert had a brother Henry Herbert. However, I don't believe that Dr. Walter and Henry's relationship to the older Walter, Bridget, and Francis and Thomas has been clearly documented. They all lived in Gravesend, Long Island, then Monmouth NJ together and there is obviously some relationship.Note that Dr. Walter Herbert's third wife's Phoebe Mount's sister married James Herbert, a grandson of Thomas, son of Bridget & Walter.
