Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, Hartselle, for Herbert Alton Bartlett, 79, formerly of Hartselle and Centre, who passed away Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005, in Tucson, Ariz. The Revs. Harold Thompson and Clint Busler will officiate. Peck Funeral Home is in charge.
He was the son of the late Dewey Henry and Minnie Ballenger Bartlett, Boaz.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Sarah Callaham Bartlett; his daughter, Sarah Jean Bartlett; and a sister, Joyce Bartlett Milwee. He graduated from Sardis High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II in the Pacific Theatre aboard the U.S.S. Crenshaw. Alton was in banking for 40 years. He and five other men organized American Bank & Trust of Hartselle in 1965. Alton served as president. The bank is now Regions Bank of Hartselle. He also served as vice president of Colonial Bank, Hartselle. He is survived by his wife, Peggy, Tucson; son, Herbert, Hartselle; daughters, Solane Thomas (Michael), Colorado Springs, Colo., and Janet Waugaman (Donald), Tucson; grandchildren, Nicholas and Megan Bartlett, Hartselle, Hayden and Justin Thomas, Colorado Springs, and Andrew and Hailey Waugaman, Tucson; brother, the Rev. Shelton Bartlett, Savannah, Ga.; and sisters, Grace Whitt and Elise Traylor, Gadsden. Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery, Fort Payne, on Thursday at 3 p.m. Peck Funeral Home is in charge. The Rev. Charles Hazel will officiate. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, American Cancer Society or the church fund of your choice. Pallbearers will be Herbert Bartlett, Nicholas Bartlett, David Whitt, Daniel Whitt, Michael Whitt and John Traylor. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Fred Sherrill, Dr. Robert D. Sitason, Howard Fowler, Paul Lee, Charles Quinn, Franklin Stewart, Richard Lyons and Charles Reid. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
