My 4th great grandmother was Martha Bartlett, b. 1759/60 in Winsor, Isle of Wight Co., Va, m to Charles Knight b. 1759/60 in Hanover Co., Va.Her father is listed as George Bartlett. That much I know for sure!I have found a George Bartlett, b. 1739 of Newbury, Ma (or Amesbury) and married Priscilla Jacobs (daugher of George)on 16 Sept 1736.Their children are listed: Capt. Joshua (bpt 1737), George , b. 1739, Priscilla, Mathias, Hannah, Samuel, Abigail, Timothy and Lydia.Of Joshua I found "he was a sea captain and was lost at sea.He may have been that Joshua Bartlett, master of the schooner ELIZABETH listed for a voyage from Boston to South Carolina"... My supposition---could George have sailed with his brother, Joshua to Va/Carolinas, which is where Martha was born?????There is a deed dated 28 Nov. 1789 witnessed by George Bartlett. Also in the book "Some Ancient Landowners in St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County, Virginia" I found in 1763 "George Bartlett owned 100 acres and was not named a landowner in processions of St. Paul's Parish.
Then I found two entries in the Jefferson Co., Va.Ky, Early marriages, Books I & II:Bartlett, John, Jr., bd. George Bartlett; wt. J.W. Harrison, m. 4-8-1819 Bartlett, Elizabeth, f. James Bartlett.Book II:Johnson, William...m 7-22-1836 Bartlett, Mary; wid. of George Bartlett, dec. (Would make my George pretty old???) The other fact I know, Martha had a brother, Hasten Bartlett who was in Hilloboro, NC in 1808.
Hopefully someone can fill in the blanks!!!Thank you. Carol Bousley
