I think I can prove Starling was NOT a son of Hastin BARTLETT, based on a letter from Hasten BARTLETT, mailed 18 Jul 1808 in NC, to Mr Charles KIGHT of Mason Co, KY found in book: Letters of KNIGHT, BUCHANAN and GUNN, by Leda Knight - a compilation of letters between these families in early 1800's - thanks to Carol Bousley].
Hastin writes: Dear Brother, ... I & my family are all well. I have nine children. The 2 oldest is left me which is Nancy M & Edward.Edward is living in Hillsborough... My oldest daughter Nancy, is maraid & has three children.... (signed) Hasten Bartlett.
Note: Charles KIGHT married Hasten's sister, Martha, and was thus his brother-in-law - see other posts on this forum.
The 1800 & 1810 Caswell Co, NC census and 1820 & 1830 Person Co, NC census for Hasten BARTLETT match his statement of 9 children. 1. female b 1774-84 2. male b 1784-90 3. female b 1784-90 4. female b 1790-94 5. female b 1794-1800 6. male b 1794-1800 7. female b c1800 8. male b 1800-02 9. female b 1804-10
from other records, it appears these children are: 1. Nancy b c1783; married 1802 [mentioned in 1808 letter] 2. Edward b c 1786; [mentioned in 1808 letter]; m 1814 Elizabeth MUZZALL; Edward died c1819 leaving 3 children; Mrs. Elizabeth [MUZZALL] BARTLETT remarried 1824 William HIGHTOWER. 3. Patience "Patsy" b c1788; married 1808 Christopher THOMAS 4. Elizabeth M b c1793; m 1815 James POYNER 5. Sarah b c1796; m 1816 Charles M POYNER 6. Nelson b c1798 7. Mary b c1800; m 1822 Armisted C HENRY 8. Thompson M b 1802; m 1826 Susan MOORE 9. Susan b c1807; m 1831 John BLACKWELL
Alas there is no "room" for a Starling BARTLETT b c1784. Also he would have been the eldest son, and then mentioned in Hasten's letter - I have found no record of Starling BARTLETT in any county in NC.I can only conclude that Starling was NOT Hastin's son.
