There is a new DNA test that does not depend on an all-male or an all-female line. This new test, called Family Finder Test, from www.FamilyTreeDNA.com tests over 500,000 places on the DNA sample (the best Y-DNA test is 67 markers).FTDNA claims that this test will show a match between two 4th or even 5th cousins, from any of your ancestors 6 generations back. This is a very exciting breakthrough in DNA testing.
I signed up for this test and recently my results were posted at FTDNA, along with 67 matches.I have begun emailing the matches and comparing ancestors. In some cases, the match and I can't determine our common ancestor. In one case it's a 3rd cousin. In another case our common ancestor is 8 generations back: George BUSH b 1721 -> daughter -> son -> son -> son -> daughter -> daughter -> son -> me! (the Family Finder DNA match is a 7th cousin to me). This result is not common or expected, but it is possible.FTDNA believes most 4th and some 5th cousins will show up as a match regularly.
This is very good news for all genealogists. It is very exciting news for adoptees or others who are stuck 3 or 4 or even 5 generations back.
