I have one version found in a book about John Bartlett of Weymouth & Cumberland by Thomas Edward Bartlett; "All persons in this country, named Bartlett, are without doubt of Norman ancestry. There is a large estate at Stopham, Sussex, England, consisting of some thousands of acres which has been in possession of the Bartletts for hundreds of years....it goes on and finally says; The first of the family was Adam Barttelot, an esquire in the retinue of Brian, a Knight, and they came into England with William, the Conqueror, and fought at Hastings. Both were granted lands." There is a bit more and if you would like a copy-send me your postal address--or maybe you can find the book at the library. Another page I copied shows two coat of arms.
